On 1 August 1989, an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale occurred at 15:00 local time in Irian Jaya. More than 50 fatalities occurred as a result of building collapse, while around 200 people were evacuated when a landslide triggered by the earthquake blocked the Baliem River causing flooding upstream that inundated three villages.
