Eruptive activity at Merapi started on 2 March comprising pyroclastic flows caused by eruption column collapse, ashfall and lava flows. On 18 March, pyroclastic flows destroyed at least three villages. Explosive eruptions resumed on 3 January 1956, accompanied by pyroclastic flows, small debris avalanches, and ash fall that led to the collapse of many roofs. Heavy rains falling on ash deposits also triggered the formation of lahars.
