Fifteen on-shore and off-shore eruptions of mud volcanoes occurred in the South Gobustan district of Azerbaijan during 2001. The largest of which occurred at the Durandug mud volcano. 700m³ of debris was erupted covering approximately 30 hectares of land. No damage or loss of life was recorded1.
At the Lokbatan crater, the initial flame was around 100 m in diameter and approximately 400 m high and lasted about 24 hours. The ejected mud covered the crater area to a distance of more than 150 m in all directions to a depth of several metres2.
