Hurricane Ivan struck Jamaica between 10 and 11 September 2004. Fortunately, the island was spared the full impact of the storm due to the eye passing 48 km to the south-west of the island1. The storm surge reached 2-8 m in height along sections of the east and south coast and waves as high as 20 m were recorded at West End, Negril2.
Ivan resulted in the temporary displacement of 4000 people from 182 communities3.
Hilly areas suffered major landslides, soil erosion, tree and crop damage and major property damage was recorded in the districts of Clarendon, Manchester, St Elizabeth and Westmoreland2.
The agricultural sector was severely impacted as a result of floods. Losses were recorded for crops such as coffee, bananas, citrus fruits, coconut, cocoa and sugarcane. Dairy production and the poultry industry also suffered severe losses3.
