M 7.0 Earthquake - February 1996, Indonesia

On 17 February 1996 at 14:59 local time an earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale struck Irian Jaya in eastern Indonesia. The epicentre was located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 110 km east of Biak at a depth of 33 km. The main earthquake was felt in Biak, Sarmi, Manokwari and Serui and was followed by 403 aftershocks, four of which measured 6 on the Richer scale. A minor tsunami was reported.
