M 7.3 Earthquake - May 2000, Indonesia
At 12:21 local time on 4 May 2000, an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck the eastern part of Sulawesi causing severe damage in the districts of Banggai and Bangkep and generating a tsunami totally submerging some villages and damaging many others. An estimated 10,500 families were left homeless by the earthquake and tsunami combined. Numerous aftershocks followed the main shock, including a Richter Magnitude 6.1 event on 15 May.
