On 27 May 2006 a Richter Magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck central Java¹. The city of Yogyakarta, close to the erupting Merapi volcano, was worst hit with thousands of lives lost and over 600,000 people left homeless². In the Gunung Kidul region of Yogyakarta Province approximately 90 percent of schools were damaged or destroyed³.
