M 6.3 Earthquake - May 2006, Indonesia
On 27 May 2006 a Richter Magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck central Java1. The city of Yogyakarta, close to the erupting Merapi volcano, was worst hit with thousands of lives lost and over 600,000 people left homeless2. In the Gunung Kidul region of Yogyakarta Province approximately 90 percent of schools were damaged or destroyed3.
