On 26 February 1902, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake off the coast of El Salvador produced a 3-wave tsunami of unreported heights, although recent research suggests that wave heights could have been as high as 10 m and penetrated up to 100 m inland near La Libertad and Acajutla (west El Salvador). The tsunami devastated 120 km of coast, flooded houses and trees and claimed nearly 200 lives.
