Tropical Storm Stan - October 2005, El Salavdor

Tropical Storm Stan first made landfall in El Salvador with sustained winds of 129 km/h on 3 October 20051,2. In the first 24 hours 250 mm of rainfall was recorded resulting in extensive flooding across 300 communities3,2.
A combination of the storm, the subsequent flooding and the simultaneous eruption of the Ilamatepec volcano resulted in 36,154 people requiring shelter with over 72,000 people displaced in all4,3. Health problems in the shelters, some resulting from contaminated water, added to the effects of the catastrophe4.
