After an explosion on 4 December, an ash column 3 km high was produced and ash fell in the states of Tlaxcala (50 km NE of the volcano) and Puebla (60 km E of the volcano)1,2. 40,000 people were evacuated from the vicinity of the volcano but no damage occurred1.

After 12 December, activity consisted only of small emissions of steam and gas2.
