On 28 March following an explosion, Mt Cameroon erupted aa lava. Strombolian activity then dominated until 13 April 1999 after which, no more explosive activity was recorded. A lava flow from the eruption travelled 12 km and stopped approximately 200 m from the Atlantic Ocean. The lava flow severely damaged forest and palm plantations and led to the evacuation of 600 people.
