On 25 December 1988, Lonquimay volcano near Temuco erupted with moderate intensity leading to ash falling up to 50km downwind in a region inhabited by 10,000 people and hosting 90,000 cattle. Up to 2000 people evacuated voluntarily1.
Heavy ashfall from the eruption, which lasted over a year, caused severe economic disruption2.
