Commencing on 15 June 1986 heavy storms caused severe flooding in metropolitan Santiago and in the regions of OHiggins and Maule. 40,000 to 50,000 people were made homeless and 30 to 40 percent of the population of Chile faced water shortages due to contaminated water supplies.
