On 2 October 1878 at 18:00 local time, an earthquake struck the town of Jacuapa causing extensive damage. The settlements of Chinameca, San Buenaventura, El Triunofo, Lolotioque and Nueva Guadelupe were also badly damaged, while a landslide triggered by the earthquake buried 14 people at El Tigre.
