Adding a Notable Past Event Page

1. Go to 'create content' in the grey bar on the left hand side of the screen.

2. Scroll down to and click on 'Notable past event'.

3. Enter an appropriate title (this is compulsory). It is preferable if you add the title as follows (N.B. the title differs for different hazard types):

a) Earthquakes: Enter 'M' followed by the magnitude of the event and the word 'earthquake'. Then add a dash (-) and add the month and year of the event follwed by a comma (,) and the country name.

e.g. M 7.7 Earthquake - July 2006, Indonesia

b) Drought: Enter the word 'Drought' followed by a dash (-) and the month (if applicable or available) and year of the event. A comma (,) should then follow as well as the country name.

e.g Drought - 1998, Mexico

c) Floods: Enter the word 'Flood' followed by a dash (-) and the month and year of the event. A comma (,) should then follow as well as the country name.

e.g. Flood - August 2001, Iran

d) Mass movement: Enter the hazard type e.g. Landslides, Mudslides, Mass movement, Rock Avalanche, Snow Avalanche, etc. This should be followed by a dash (-) and the month and year of the start of the event. Then enter a comma (,) as well as the country name.

e.g. Landslide - September 1982, El Salvador
e.g. Mudslides - October 2005, El Salvador

e) Tsunami: Enter 'Tsunami' followed by a dash (-) and the month and year of the event. Then enter a comma (,) as well as the country name.

e.g. Tsunami - February 1902, El Salvador

f) Volcanic activity: Enter the volcano name folowed by the word 'eruption'. Add a dash (-) followed by the month and year that the event started. Then enter a comma (,) as well as the country name.

e.g. Pinatubo Eruption - June 1991, Philippines

g) Wildfires: Enter the word 'Wildfires' followed by a dash (-) and the month and year that the event started. Then enter a comma (,) as well as the country name.

e.g. Wildfires - March 2000, Indonesia

h) Windstorms: For a tornado enter the word 'Tornado' followed by a dash (-) and the month and year of the event. Then enter a comma (,) as well as the country name.

e.g. Tornado - March 2006, Bangladesh

For a tropical storm or tropical cyclone enter the hazard i.e. hurricane, typhoon, etc. followed by the name of the event e.g. Hurricane Mitch, Typhoon Xangsane, etc. Then add a dash (-) followed by the month and year of when the event occurred. Then enter a comma (,) as well as the country name.

e.g. Hurricane Emily - July 2005, Jamaica
e.g. Typhoon Utor - July 2001, Philippines

4. Once you have selected a title select a start date and an end date for the event. If you wish, you can select the calenda icon beneath the start date and end date fields to scroll through a calenda to find the appropriate date for the event.

5. Select the hazard type by using the drop-down bar (this is compulsory). If the event has a secondary hazard/s i.e. if an earthquake triggers a tsunami, you can highlight the hazard by clicking one. If you wish to select more than one secondary hazard type then use the control button to highlight the one's you want.

6. If there are any keywords that are highly relevant and/or unique to the Notable Past Event that you are creating then type in the word in the field. If there are more than one then type the first word followed by a space, then a dash then a space followed by the next word.

e.g. Lahar - Rainfall

7. If there are any related events on the inTERRAgate website enter the first few words of the title of the Notable Past Event and then scroll down the list that appears to select the appropriate one.

8. Enter the main text for the hazard including references (this is compulsory). For further information on how to reference see 'Adding References' in the 'Help' section. The references must also be added in the order that they appear in the text.

9. Enter the fields below if the information is available. This section does not need to be referenced. Enter the values with no gaps i.e. 256008. Once the page has been submitted it will automatically appear as 256,008.

N.B. All economic damage figures muct be added in US dollars only. If you have any values that are not in US dollars then please convert it. The website http://www.xe.com/ucc/ is very useful for this. You do not need to enter US dollars in the tab. This will automatically appear once you have submitted the page. Please enter the values with no gaps i.e. 360000000. This will be automatically changed to 360,000,000 once the page has been submitted.

10. If there is a GLIDE number available for the notable past event then please insert it into the fields provided. Drop-down menus are provided for this. The only figure that needs to be typed in is the unique number. This must be typed into the 'Glide serial number' field. 11. Select a country from the drop-down menu (this is compulsory).

12. If the event has an exact location e.g. an earthquake epicentre, a volcano, etc. then please enter the latitude and longitude in the fields provided. If the latitude is west enter a minus sign (-) before the value. If the longitude is south enter a minus sign (-) before the value.

13. To see what the Notable Past Event page you have created will look like once submitted click the 'Preview' tab at the bottom of tha page.

14. To submit the Notable Past Event page click the 'Submit' tab.
